UI Artist/Designer

Hutch is looking for a talented and experienced UI artist/designer to help deliver benchmark free-to-play gaming experiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate will…

  • Collaborate with F2P Designers and the Product Owner to prepare an excellent UI design.
  • Collaborate with the Product Owner and creative stakeholders to define an appropriate UI art style.
  • Work with client engineers to deliver well functioning and bug free UI in a commercially available game.
  • Create high quality UI artwork and the associated source assets.
  • Design elegant UX layouts.
  • Be required to attend regular design meetings and team presentations.
  • Contribute to planning and scheduling.
  • Work in the London studio within a team of 8 to 20 people.

Requirements

The candidate…

  • Must have 4 years minimum experience creating UI for free-to-play games on mobile platforms.
  • Must have 4 years minimum experience creating UI for games that use established RPG mechanics.
  • Must have 2 years experience working on a live-ops product
  • Must have a university degree.
  • Must demonstrate a design workflow: Starting from paper level, through wireframes to functioning prototypes.
  • Must demonstrate an understanding for, and suitable attitude towards, UX/communication design conventions and how they affect player behaviour.
  • Must demonstrate an understanding for different audiences and what’s culturally relevant to them.
  • Must present examples of excellent artwork in more than one art style and theme.

Artistry

We expect the candidate to…

  • Posses the prerequisite graphic design skills (sense of proportion, layout, graphical form, typography)
  • Show examples of work in a more painterly 2D style.
  • Demonstrate a good sense of colour and composition.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of past, current and emerging design trends.

Software and Organisational Requirements

We use different tools for different games so it is important that the UI designer engage with the toolset, understand the technical capabilities of the platform and find creative solutions within technical constraints.

requirements include:

  • Extensive experience with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator
  • At least 4 years using Unity 3D and the Unity GUI tools
  • Some experience with VFX, 2D animation and motion graphics
  • A general willingness to learn new tools and solve technical problems
  • Elegantly constructed and well organised source assets
  • Experience with 3D art software is not a requirement but beneficial

Art Director

We are looking for a candidate with an eye for quality, but, at Hutch, we are guided by the principles of Lean Startup. Therefore we require that she or he understands how to balance that quality with consideration for its value and relevance in the product. We are steered by the demands of our consumers so we are looking for a candidate that is practised at considering the consumer’s point of view.

The ideal candidate would have a mixture of experience of console and free-to-play games on mobile platforms with the more recent experience being with the latter.

Must have an understanding of F2P principles and how it affects the creative operation.

She or he should have a footing in and confidence with graphic design. So experience with 2D skills such as layout, type, UI and presentation material are of specific interest as well as traditional console art direction dealing with 3D and texturing.

At Hutch, we identify the core values for a product in the form of pillars. The art style is designed in accordance with those pillars: We want the candidate to have experience with an understanding of a relevantly similar process.

QA Embedded Tester

Embedded Tester

Reporting to the QA Project Lead, the embedded tester will be working within a small mobile games development team in an agile environment. They should be a good communicator with excellent people skills and strong technical skills. The candidate would be expected to own the testing for significant aspects of one of our mobile projects, completing in-house testing and regression. The candidate must be self-motivated, well organised and have a real passion for QA.

Our QA philosophy is centred around close collaboration with the development team, focussing on bug prevention over detection. QA at Hutch are embedded within the development teams and form strong partnerships with the developers and the production team. QA is not seen as a service, it is a partnership.

Key responsibilities:

Design and execute functional and regression test plans (Manual Testing)
Working embedded within the development team completing in-house testing and bug regression Attending and contributing to sprint planning, retrospectives, and the daily scrums.
Reporting on build status
Tracking bug progress / database management
Implementation of bug prevention methods
Pro-active risk analysis to identify key areas of testing
Customer support

Desired Skills and Experience:

A good understanding of Agile development & testing
Experience working embedded within a development team, ideally in Mobile games
Mobile application testing experience (iOS/Android) – functional & non-functional
Knowledge of the games development lifecycle
Experience with JIRA or other bug tracking systems
An understanding of the free to play business model and mobile games market
Good attention to detail

Live Ops Designer

We are seeking a Live Ops Designer to join the team in our Central London studio. Hutch is a dynamic games studio, founded on a wealth of game development experience blended with developers passionate about creating the best free to play racing games.

The successful candidate will be working on live operations gameplay design on strategic racing games. They will work closely with other designers, analysts, and community managers, to create time-limited events that engage a dedicated, passionate audience.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design and execute a roadmap of time-limited in-game activities to drive engagement and revenue
  • Utilising CRM to promote live ops and help drive engagement
  • Observe player behavioural analytics and community discussions to create reports on game performance to iterate on and improve live operations strategy
  • Work with marketing and user acquisition to prepare live ops related assets for in-game promotions and user acquisition campaigns

Requirements

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a related field of study
  • Knowledge of the automotive industry
  • Experience of mobile game development, especially F2P
  • Knowledge of statistics and/or data analytics tools
  • Experience in community management or live operations management will be advantageous

Community Manager

As a vital member of the Brand and Content Marketing team, the Community Manager will join a dynamic and fast-paced environment and will define and deliver strategies that drive the growth, engagement and positive sentiment of Hutch’s game communities.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Grow and nurture the community for one of our FTP mobile racing titles.
  • Execute the player community strategy and work with the Head of Social to develop this.
  • Take responsibility for communication via all community-channels (boards, Social Media, blogs) and keep players up to date.
  • Write engaging copy and generate great content ideas and social campaigns /calendars tailored for each channel, working collaboratively with game teams and the Head of Social.
  • Proactively seek dialogue with our players, inform, listen, prepare the community’s feedback and deliver input to the game and marketing creative key stakeholders.
  • Run the in-game and web forums, establishing an efficient and scalable strategy for moderation to ensure our communities are friendly and collaborative.
  • Be the bond between the game team and players and work closely with key stakeholders to help develop new game features that are designed around the community’s preferences and play-patterns.
  • Execute strategic communications and delivery of (live) production initiatives to drive community engagement (see Hutch TV, live-streaming, events, contests, surveys, etc).
  • Own regular reporting of the impact of key releases and other initiatives on community sentiment.
  • Support player research initiatives providing insights from within the game communities.

Your Skills & Experience:

  • Ideally, you will have a love for games, cars and motorsport.
  • Highly self-motivated.   
  • A knowledge of our competitor’s community initiatives and the desire/ capability to take Hutch to the next level.
  • Advanced knowledge of Social Media platforms and tools (inc. services such as twitch.tv), as well as good skills in creating social media content.
  • An understanding of statistics and key KPI measurements relevant for community management and social media.
  • A diplomatic and professional approach, able to gather and share information in an energetic and inclusive manner, while dealing effectively with challenging situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong problem solving and organisation skills.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in Communications, Media or Marketing.

Server/Network Programmer

Overview

We are looking for a Server/Network Programmer to join the team in our Central London studio. Hutch is a dynamic games studio, founded on a wealth of traditional game development experience, blending a bunch of people who are talented and passionate about making the best free to play games.

The successful candidate will be designing, prototyping and developing server-based multiplayer game systems, including both synchronous and asynchronous gameplay, matchmaking, leaderboards, DLC and more. Working very closely with designers, programmers and the technical director to solve the many challenges involved in creating a high quality, scalable, secure and performant online user experience in the most efficient manner possible to release in the desired time frame.

This is a permanent full-time role. It is based in Old Street, London with the option to work remotely 2 days per week at the discretion of the business, in addition to a very competitive salary package.

Responsibilities

Growing our multiplayer service into innovative new areas across new titles, using the latest technology to develop the most compelling online experience for our players.

Designing and building new online functionality in a maintainable, robust and flexible manner, ensuring scalability and readiness for rapid post-launch updates in response to customer feedback.

Writing tools where necessary to empower artists, designers and customer services to administrate the online services as much as possible.

Be actively involved in design discussions to make best use of technology.

Requirements

Strong technical design and code skills in suitable Web technologies and frameworks, including JavaScript/C#/.NET, Node.js, Azure/AWS, SQL/NoSQL, Redis, DC/OS, Docker, Marathon, or similar.

Broad experience of server/network programming and principles, including database design, replication, load balancing, reliable/unreliable messaging, latency minimisation, security.

2+ years of server/network development experience in high load scenarios. Games and/or Unity experience desirable but not essential.

A passion for the latest Web technology, an interest in games a definite advantage.

Senior Gameplay Programmer

We are looking for a Senior Gameplay Programmer to join the team in our Central London studio. Hutch is a dynamic games studio, founded on a wealth of traditional game development experience, blending a bunch of people who are talented and passionate about making the best free to play games.

The successful candidate will be working on gameplay across multiple platforms (iOS, Android) using the Unity engine. Working very closely with designers, artists, other programmers and the technical director to solve the many challenges involved in creating a high quality and performant user experience in the most efficient manner possible to release in the desired time frame.

Implementing all areas of the game application, including (but not exclusively) gameplay, player controls, game simulation behaviours, AI, meta-game behaviour, user interface, visual effects, audio effects, analytics hooks, and social features.

Writing tools where necessary to empower artists and designers to make the game as much as possible, and providing mentoring and support to junior programmers.

Requirements

Strong technical design and code skills, preferably in C# with Unity, though strong C++ experience is acceptable in a motivated candidate.

5+ years of mobile, console and/or PC development experience.

CS/Community Specialist

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about cars, games, and helping players get the most from our titles in the US/Canadian timezone. Reporting to the Customer Support Manager, the role will mainly focus on Customer Support, interacting with VIP players, helping out on our forums, and direct marketing campaigns using our CRM system with the scope to specialise in one of these roles in the future.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond promptly and professionally to customer enquiries
  • Handle and resolve customer complaints
  • Perform and record customer refunds where appropriate
  • Be the face of the company – work with passion and integrity – respond as a person and be honest and upfront with our customers
  • Provide feedback on the efficiency of the customer service process
  • Being the first point of contact for VIP players via our CRM system
  • Build strong relationships with valuable customers and provide superb service and gaming experiences tailored to them, across all products
  • Initiate campaigns that will drive activity for high net worth customers, ensure that they are generated in a timely manner, results monitored and reported
  • Monitor the customer base for new VIP customer potential
  • Localisation of presets and FAQ articles
  • Work alongside game teams to plan and execute in game events and promotions.

Senior Marketing Artist

Hutch is looking for an experienced high quality marketing artist. The candidate will work with art directors and creative stake holders in the creation of high quality digital artwork for marketing and presentation.
Each of our games is created according to brand guidelines. We are looking for a self motivated person who is willing to engage with the brand guidelines and to immerse themself in the marketable positioning of each game.
Hutch makes games related to racing and cars. The artist will compose images using vehicle models, characters and environmental elements to create stunning action set pieces and glossy automotive beauty shots.
Uses include: Hi-res promotional banners for iTunes and Google Play; Game icons; hi-res images for print; in game splash screens; in-game promotions.

SOFTWARE and TECHNICAL
The candidate needs to have a high level of competency with the software required. Principally…
• 3D package – Maya preferred
• Offline renderer – V-Ray preferred
• Photoshop
• 3D sculpt package
It is important to have good technical instincts and tidiness
• Well ordered Topology
• Software lighting techniques
• An understanding of how to use materials and surfaces (e.g. car paint shaders)
• A curiosity for new techniques and ability to adapt workflow for differing compositional results

ARTISTRY
Compositions will be a collaboration with art directors and other artists. This candidate will contribute to ideas at an early stage of the visual design, providing thumb nails and mock-ups. Therefore it’s important that the candidate have good foundational art skills.
• A good sense of composition
• Innate sense of colour and able to demonstrate an understanding of colour theory
• A good feel for the effects of light and atmospherics. Including an understanding of outdoor lighting and an ability to create depth and atmosphere within an image
• A good sense of form, weight and space
• Understand the importance of narrative, even in the simplest of scenes
